Emma Gray HQ is delighted to present “FREQUENCIES” a set of a large scale paintings in a pop-up exhibition by Rema Ghuloum at 646 N Spring street in Chinatown opening September 3rd from 12-5pm and closing  on September 30th.

“My paintings are reflections on the past, grounded in the present. They have a pulse. Rising and falling, they float through time, a day, a night, a memory, a vision. Patterns repeat. Unrecognizable to the eye, but deeply familiar to the body. Like mountains that move like waves. Or clouds that look like oceans, they shift between states ofbeing. Color is the source. A spectrum of sensations, vibrations, frequencies that expand and contract, breathing deeply, chanting, humming, weeping, formless, awareness. They feel everything at once.”

According to some of the greatest minds in history (Einstein or NikolaTesla), everything that consists of atoms has a frequency or vibration, every object and every person on this planet emits a frequency pattern. Every painting, every sculpture, every stone...

Vibrational spectroscopy is the study of the energy (which for scientists identifies the frequency) of the vibration of molecular bonds. Atoms are held together in molecules because the negatively charged electrons in one atom are pulled toward the positively charged nucleus of another and vice versa. At the same time, the electrons in one atom repel those in the other.*

It is this constant push-pull that can create a vibration, as if the atoms were connected by tiny springs in constant motion. The vibration is unique for each possible arrangement of atoms in a molecule, and in the language of quantum mechanics, each vibration has a characteristic"energy level,” * or “frequency” as we are naming this series of Rema Ghuloum’s paintings. And, because Rema is so highly attuned to the studies of energy through her practice of reiki and meditation, she  is exceptionally aware and conscious of the vibrational patterns and energies she emits as she paints.

Specifically, the term “Frequency” refers to the number of waves that pass a fixed a point in unit time. Any electromagnetic wave's frequency multiplied by its wavelength equals the speed of light. Frequency and wavelength have an inverse relationship. This relates to color and all the colors on the spectrum, so as the frequency increases from red to violet, the wavelength decreases. Red for example has a lower frequency and violet is at the top of the vibrational spectrum.

While every artist’s work automatically emits a frequency -  created intuitively or unconsciously, Rema brings a hyper awareness  and sensitivity to her work. This feeling is akin to synesthesia, as she tunes in, pours, glazes, scumbles, layers and dabs pigment with wave-like rhythms, sanding in between to expose the history of her process. The frequencies pour through her as she works the canvas. These paintings are meant to be felt and experienced with your whole body as much as they are with your eyes, heart and mind.

FREQUENCY OF OSCILLATION x WAVELENGTH = SPEED OF LIGHT
