I have always been fascinated by the dreamy atmospheres people make together in the arts, and by the occult currents of aesthetic knowledge that move through cities, friendship, co-work, studios, and the Internet. We Breathe the Same Air grows out of that interest.

The project brings together works by Kenneth Anger via Sprüth Magers Gallery, Catherine Corman, Emma Gray, Jon Pylypchuk, Rebekah Rubalcava, Saul Appelbaum in collaboration with Artists Artists, Danita Nuchsawat Appelbaum, Santiago Evans Canales, Oceana Celeste, Elodie Goldberg Jacquemain, Hyungi Park of Goyo, Natalia Reyes, and writing by Susan Aberth—a small constellation where some of this collective dreaming converges.

Emma Gray is a British artist and healer working between Los Angeles, London, and New York. She studied at UCL and trained in portraiture at Heatherley’s School of Fine Art, London, before moving to New York, working in well known galleries and as the Features Editor ar ArtReview and later founding Five Car Garage, the LA gallery she ran from 2013 to 2024. In 2016 she built a meditation studio above the gallery, where she led breathwork/rekii meditation groups for a decade - painting and practising in the same space, one discipline informing the other. She now paints and works with healing and meditation full time.

At the root of her work is nature itself and the Four Elements: earth, air, fire, water, and the energy that moves between a human figure and the land, sky, and sea around it. The paint drips because that is how she sees the natural world working. Nothing holds its edge for long. Water falls, becomes vapour, becomes water again. What’s seen and what’s felt are the same substance.

Each work is a series of investigations, perhaps an emotional unburdening...
