Don Edler

6871 California Ave

Los Angeles | January 11 - March 13 2019

Five Car Garage is pleased to announce 6871 California Ave a solo presentation by Don Edler. Edler will exhibit a selection of works originally developed while the artist was living in Joshua Tree between 2014 and 2015. During this time Edler lived alone without internet or cell reception and developed a introspective body of work revolving around self portraiture and boredom. Inspired by daily hikes through the vast washes and BLM land surrounding his live/work homestead, Edler merged found rocks, experimental processes and improvisation to craft a body of self-portrait busts and still-life installations that reflected his experience. These pieces incorporated various reference points including sci-fi imagery, casting, crayola crayons, 3D printing, ceramics and custom shelving to create playful examinations of the self juxtaposed against a backdrop of serene desert landscapes.

In addition to his sculptural and photographic experiments, Edler also produced The Father, the Sun, and the Holy Road, 2015, a short documentary made with his late father relating to the nature of making, art world mythology, and the pseudo-religious undercurrents of an art practice. This highly personal film was produced in the Dominican Republic and the United States over the course of two years and was originally exhibited as a theatrical installation at the San Diego Institute of Art as part of Edler’s 2015 solo exhibition at the museum.

Born in Bremen, Germany, Don Edler is an interdisciplinary artist working in sculpture, photography, video and drawing. His works often incorporate idiosyncratic processes to create layered imagery related to pop-culture, archeology, museology and personal experience. Don Edler is the founder of ELEVATOR MONDAYS an experimental social art space in Pico Union focused on showing Los Angeles based emerging artists. Edler has recently exhibited with Ochi Projects, Los Angeles; Leroy’s, Los Angeles; Roger’s Office, Los Angeles and Hunter Shaw Fine Art, Los Angeles. Edler lives and works in Los Angeles.
