“Blue”  oil on salvaged canvas, 6 x 5 inches from early 2000’s - 2022

“Central to this work is a curiosity about atmospheric phenomenon, and spaces that open”

Emma Gray HQ is very happy to present ‘The Coasting’, the first solo exhibition with Emma Gray HQ at Garage no1 with the anonymous artist known as New.shiver, opening September 17th 2022.

The intimately-scaled paintings in ‘The Coasting"; are built-up in layers -  impasto smears and curves of oil paint across a miniaturized surface often around just 4 x 5 inches indimension on linen or canvas.  These are paintings of weather-dreams, atmospheric phenomena.  They carry shape-shifting shelters, and changing exits.

Small hand held canvases get rich coats of thick oilpaint.  The first few layers form an uncertain structure. Once dry enough to handle, they're revisited as miniature environments. Their scenes are explored, and depths and perplexing color relationships are coaxed along.

Starry, gem-like, nocturnal scenes become immersions.  Treecanopy, caverns, or low hanging clouds may appear. Unexpectedshowers become shelter.  Eventually, each scene arriving at a place where it can continue to open and change, long after it's finished.

Their diminutive scale re-enforces their intensity. Jewel-like, lit from within,  physical and commanding for their scale.  These are reminiscent of the natural world, think sea scapes or a landscape from a lying-in-the-grass-perspective. A pocket of sky or crag of a rock, may pop in here and there. Central to this work is a curiosity about atmospheric phenomenon, and spaces that open.

New.shiver is an artist living and working in the United States.

"I never wish to be easily defined. I’d rather float over other people’s minds as something strictly fluid and non-perceivable; more like a transparent, paradoxically iridescent creature rather than an actual person"
