Kirsten Stoltmann “I AM SO HAPPY” 2011 Feb 19 – Mar 16 Opening Feb 19th 6-9pm

Emma GrayHQ is SO HAPPY to present “I AM SO HAPPY”, an exhibition of new works by Los Angeles-based artist Kirsten Stoltmann. Stoltmann practices her own self-help version of sincere irony by taking on the tropes of new age language and affirmation meditations. I AM SO HAPPY is a bedazzled 8ft x 4ft collage, covered with 762,431 and a half , colored fake gems. It is as much a declaration of wish fulfillment as it is a self-mocking acceptance of a less than ecstatic state of mind. By doing “busy work” and occupying her hands for twelve straight months in fastidious exertion, Stoltmann soldiered away, maintaining that she can (hopefully) work her way out of the abyss, perhaps to the ultimate place – nirvana.
In the video Post-Nothing Stoltmann presents herself both as a victim and survivor. In the quilted environs of her milquetoast neighborhood, a leafy suburb northeast of Los Angeles, the artist is assaulted and barraged with gunshots and arrows while jogging. Stoltmann’s video points to the contradictory nature of ‘safe’ suburban communities with wry and self-deprecating wit — as she survives the literal slings and arrows of misfortune, the artist not only lives and breathes but keeps jogging until…
In the EGHQ office, Stoltmann creates a wall of collaged paintings, ripped from the pages of fashion magazines like, Vanity Fair and Vogue. Stoltmann takes the doctors waiting room approach to flipping through the glossies and defaces them with words — slogans that many of us think but wouldn’t say.
We hope that you will come and see Kirsten Stoltmann’s show at EmmaGrayHQ, but please enter at your own risk. You might just leave HAPPY.
